Dear Highwood Families,
On behalf of all Highwood teachers, we want to thank you for your words of encouragement, acts of solidarity, and treats to show your appreciation. We have been overwhelmed by your support and will continue to do our best to provide your child with the best education possible.
It’s almost November and we’ve been very lucky with the mild weather! But we know that this luck won’t last forever… Just a reminder to have your child dressed appropriately for the weather as they will be outside two times a day for recess and sometimes for gym. This includes boots, mittens and hat along with dressing in layers (so that they can take off layers should it get warmer in the afternoon). Please label all items as our lost and found tends to get really full during the winter months! ‘Lost’ items that have a name on it are returned to students.
Here are just a few information items and reminders for the month of November:
- Celebrations- Treats for Students
- Owl’s Nest Book Fair
- Collecting Tabs from Cans for Donation
- Annual Donation Campaign coming soon
- Important November dates
Celebrations- Treats for Students
We understand that often students want to celebrate their birthdays or other special events with their peers at school. We ask that if you want to provide treats, all students in the class are included, and that they are store bought with an ingredient list (not homemade) and individually packaged. Individual packages provide teachers the option of sending the treat home so that parents can decide if the students should/ can have the treat. Please ensure that the treats are nut free as some students have allergies. Teachers do not have the time or resources to cut and distribute cake, doughnuts, cookies, etc.
Owl’s Nest Book Fair
We are excited to announce that our Book Fair with Calgary’s own Owl’s Nest Books is just around the corner! The fair will be held from November 3-7, and we can’t wait to encourage our students' love for reading.
Students will have the opportunity to shop for books during school hours. It’s a great chance for them to explore new titles and pick out their next favourite reads! Families can shop from the comfort of home at owlsnestbooks.com. Use promo code HIGHWOOD at checkout to let them know you are part of our book fair. All orders can be picked up in store or shipped directly to your home.
Collecting tabs from cans for donation
Thank you for collecting tabs from cans and having your child drop them off in the office! We will continue to do this all year long to help a local charity raise funds for new wheelchairs. We are asking families to please pull off and collect the tabs off of cans and bring them to school. The charity will take these tabs to sell at a scrap metal company and the money collected will be used to purchase wheelchairs.
Annual Donation Campaign coming soon
Every year Highwood School Council organizes a donation campaign to raise money to support the school. In the past the money raised has been used to buy library books, resources for classrooms, pay for whole-school performances and activities, and gift all students a year book in June. We plan to spend the money in similar ways this year. Some time in November, an email will be sent to you with all of the details and the link to donate on-line. We no longer accept cash or cheque donations. Our goal is to raise an equivalent of $50 per student. All donations over $20 will receive a tax receipt. THIS IS THE ONLY FUNDRAISING EVENT OF THE YEAR. We will NOT be asking families to do other fundraisers such as selling cookie dough, raffles, etc.
